Help
Me Decide
Can anyone enroll? Yes,
the class is an open enrollment workshop. Also, the class is targeted at practicing software
architects and technical leads, and managers of software architecture
teams.
Is the class full?
No, we still have 3 places available in the class. We
have 10 people enrolled in the Software Architecture Workshop at this point, and
that is enough to definitely go ahead with the workshop. Please help us
make this workshop even more of a success by letting others know about the
workshop. You can email this page using the "File/Send/Page by Email"
option on Internet Explorer!
Is there overlap between
the Role class and the Architecture workshop? The Role class did not
get enough interest, so we have officially canceled it. But for future
reference, they
are stand-alone workshops, so some concepts and models covered in the
Architecture workshop have to be repeated in the Role workshop. However,
this repetition is very minimal, and provides an opportunity for review
and consolidation for those who have already taken the Architecture
workshop.
Should I take both
classes? People who take both, find that the Role workshop is a highly
valuable complement to the Architecture workshop, and almost without
exception it scores 5 out of 5 on the course evaluations! Of course, our
Software Architecture workshop scores very highly too!
The Architecture class
covers our Model of Software Architecture (see ArchitectureDefinition.PDF)
and Visual Architecting Process (see VisualArchitectingProcess.PDF),
while the Role of the Architect class goes more into the non-technical
skills of the architect (see ArchitectRole.PDF).
Is the Architecture
workshop a prerequisite for the Role class? No. Those who only take
the Role class, tend to find it fast-paced but not unmanageably so.
Do the classes apply to
other architecture disciplines? The Role of the Architect class is not
Software Architecture-specific. If you are an Enterprise Architect, System
Architect, Technology Architect, etc., you will find that it will help you
identify what competencies you need to develop, and introduce you to
techniques and skills that you'll find highly valuable.
The Software
Architecture Workshop, as the name implies, focuses on software
architecture, and uses UML as the visual modeling language, where it
applies. Many of the techniques and concepts apply to other
architecture disciplines, and we have had people from the other
related architecture disciplines take the class and find it
valuable.
Do I get credit
towards New Zealand Computing
Society Continuing Professional Development (CPD)? Yes, this
workshop is valid for CPD, and qualifies for 20 hours.

What is the value of
this class? Literally hundreds of very talented and
experienced architects have taken our classes. At the end, the vast
majority strongly claim that their business will get value from their
having taken the class. Even the most experienced architects consistently
identify key steps that they have not been undertaking on their
architecting projects. They also identify much that they have been doing
right, and value this confirmation of their use of best practice. Doing
the right steps, in the right order, to the right extent, with good
techniques and sound principles, saves architects time and makes them more
effective. Yes, there is some strength to the argument that architecting
skills are learned from experience--but the lesson is always much less
costly when it is from someone else's experience! We have focused
exclusively on software architectures, effective architectural practice,
and architecture teaching since 1995, and arguably lead the industry in
synthesizing architecture experience into our approach to architecture and
our training classes.
Who else should take this
class? We firmly believe that individuals can bring about significant
organizational change, but it takes effort and attention. It would behoove
your team to focus this leadership and effort on making the architecture
successful, rather than on figuring out a common team approach to creating
the architecture! Having the entire team take the class is obviously the
most effective way to establish a solid foundation of architecture
concepts and practice.
Please let others know about
this workshop--You can help make this workshop a success by helping us
get the word out to anyone who might be interested. You can email this page using the "File/Send/Page by Email"
option on Internet Explorer!
